It is with a very heavy heart that I share with you our
loss of Tim Nelson, VMW Chapter 3 President in
Bellingham, Washington.
Tim was a proud Marine who served in Iraq and
participated in the Battle of Fallujah. He was married
to Elisha last summer, attended Western Washington
University and worked at the Bellingham Vet Center.
Tim Nelson took his life with his own hands on July 26.
Suicide Prevention
Veterans at risk for suicide may be suffering from a
combination of emotional, physical and environmental
factors and view suicide as the easiest way to end
their pain.
If you think someone may be suicidal, no not
leave him or her alone. Try to seek immediate
help from the
VA National Suicide Prevention Hotline1-800-TALK
(8255), from his or her physician, nearest
hospital emergency room, or call 911.
If possible, eliminate access to firearms or
other potential tools for suicide, including
unsupervised access to alcohol and medications.
A person who appears suicidal needs
immediate mental health assistance and
treatment.
Membership Personal Mission Request
I am asking each of you who receives this note to
call a fellow veteran. Call the names on your roster
that haven't yet made it to a meeting, someone you
served with, someone at church or work. Check in
with them -- see if they are struggling. This is
work that the VA simply cannot do.
Help your chapter leadership create a strong support
system in your community.
Chapter 3
Tim Nelson's thoughtful questions and meaningful insight
helped to mold this organization's development. His
dynamic personality brought his community's Modern
Veteran's together and he will be forever missed.
In closing, I ask that you please take a moment to
send your regards and encouragement to
our VMW Chapter 3.
Warmest regards,
Julie
Mock, President

Jacqueline Buckley
Jacqueline Buckley
On July 19, 2008, our beloved sister, Jacqueline
Marie (Bernhardt) Buckley left us to be with the
Lord. She fought long and hard to survive to an old
age. Just short of her 57th birthday she was called
home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday,
July 28, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler
Parkway, Bismarck. Burial will be in the North
Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.
Jacqueline, daughter of Jack and Martha Bernhardt,
was born in Bismarck in 1951 and raised in
Strasburg. She was widowed twice. She was united in
marriage to Don Buckley, a wonderful man, with whom
she helped raise his children. Don was taken after a
rewarding marriage of 11 years. She then married
Philip "Red" Buckley and was blessed with nine years
of blissful marriage until Red passed away.
Jacqueline served 12 years in the U.S. Army as a
mental health specialist. She was a veteran of the
first Gulf War.
Jacqueline was a loving, nurturing spirit who
returned to Bismarck in 2003, to help care for her
mother (and best friend), Martha. She often said she
didn't know what she wanted to be when she grew up;
she tried out many options while going back to
college to explore nursing, nutrition and
occupational therapy while working as a care giver.
She was gracious, giving, observant and insightful.
She had a quick, witty sense of humor. Jackie could
be as tough as a piece of steel and soft as melted
butter.
Jackie enjoyed many hobbies including sewing,
crafting, creating jewelry, cooking, playing cards,
shopping, quilting, reading and woodworking. She was
a wonderful cook and could figure out how to fix
almost anything.
She loved life and sought to find the beauty in
everything and the good in everyone she met. She
endured with dignity her journey through the pain of
her illness. She was a warrior.
Jackie was preceded in death by her father, Jack;
her sister, Kathryn; and her husbands, Don and Red.
She is survived by her mother, Martha (Lacher)
Bernhardt; four brothers, Jim and Eloise (Nelson)
Bernhardt, Richard and Marla (Zonker) Bernhardt,

Morgenstern and Mary and Jim Wheeler; her loving
friend, Sonny, and his family; her stepchildren; her

Jim Shoop. He was eventually big brother to three
sisters. Jeff grew up in Vermillion and spent his
boyhood days riding his bike all over town and pulling
salamanders out of window wells as well as fish and
turtles out of the river. His fishing adventures grew
into a lifelong passion. Jeff graduated from Vermillion
High School in 1975. He joined the United States Army

sharing his love of the Hills with all passengers
telling them about the flowers and grasses, naming the
birds and spotting the wildlife. It was in the Hills
that he found his horse, Ace, and his dog, Nomad. It was
also here, in the Hills, that he found the love of his
life, Jan. They were married March 15, 2008. Jeff was

He was 81 and passed at his usual bedtime, surrounded by family.
Captain Baker was born in Milton on March 2, 1927, to Reuben R. Baker
Sr. and his wife, the former Irene Wallen. Grandson of Captain Lorenzo
Dow Baker, he spent the first 15 years of his life at Belvedere, the
family plantation near Morant Bay on the island of Jamaica. In the
middle of World War II, his family made its way from Jamaica back to the

in the world, including carrying sugar around the Pacific rim, moving
container ships around the Atlantic, laying cable off the coast of
Mexico, and tending oil rigs off Alaska and in the North Sea. One
highlight of his career was his work around the world on the Lulu, Knorr
and Atlantis II research vessels for the Woods Hole Oceanographic
Institute from 1972 to 1989. He was Master of Atlantis II, the mother
ship for worldwide deep-sea explorations using the submersible, Alvin,
during Bob Ballard's discovery and first explorations of the Titanic in
1986.
Throughout his life, Captain Baker was an avid model-railroad builder.
He was an active member of several model railroad associations,
